Hi my name is Kyrstal May, but some people call me “May.” I am 22 years old and originally
from Monroe, Louisiana. I was raised by my single mother who died at the age of 15, which is
when the path to homelessness started. For three years, I had been moving from couch to
couch with family and friends. Once I realized the instability in living with family and friends, I
took a chance and came to California with faith and a dream.
Since living in California, I have lived in a transitional home to help me get stabilized and find a
job and a permanent place to stay. In this experience, independence has to be the most
important lesson that my transition to adulthood has taught me. I have learned to believe in me
enough to get past any fear that I have and to be mature enough to desire it.
My future goal is to be a social worker. I would like to turn my experiences and trials as lessons
for other young adults who may be going through the same thing I went through. I firmly believe
that a lot of our adult problems were generated as children, so I want to be that person that
eliminates the issues as children before they grow.
