Why Save A Penny Employment Program?
As an aged-out foster youth, you are hit with a lot of reality when turning 18. Besides the fact that most foster kids deal with severe emotional trauma at a young age they also are left on their own when they turn 18. Studies show that kids growing up in the foster system have much higher levels of the stress hormone called cortisol.
Cortisol is public health enemy number one. Scientists have known for years that elevated cortisol levels: interfere with learning and memory, lower immune function and bone density, increase weight gain, blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease. The list goes on and on. Chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels also increase the risk for depression, mental illness, and lower life expectancy.
Being left on their own at the age of 18 only elevates the hormone even higher, thus resulting in schizophrenia. This is the reason you see so much homeless in LA speaking to their self. Most of which was developed due to high levels of stress.
The reason stress levels rise at the age of 18 because they now have to find a way of living. Lack of money for housing, food, etc creates a high dose of stress, and without a job, you have no money which leads you into panic mode. The most common psychological problems associated with unemployment are anxiety and depression. 51% Of aged out foster youth become unemployed for the first 2-4 years. Some common depression symptoms are feelings of worthlessness, helplessness, guilt, fatigue, insomnia and restlessness, anxiety includes worrying, obsessive thoughts, fear, panic, impatience, concentration problems, rapid or irregular heartbeat and nausea.
Being hit with all of these symptoms create a likely path of being in the homeless community a lot longer. Save A Penny is an employment program that prevents the psychological system to occur. We provide not only a job but opportunity to learn what is needed for living on their own. During the time of employment, each kid is equipped with a life skills development coach, mentor, financial development classes and career counseling. A program built to ignites one’s confidence and guiding them to a purpose. Apart of the employment process is getting that individual in a home of their own, we create a saving plan with the job we provide so by the time they leave the program they have enough money of their own.
Save A Penny is not any job but is a job designed to create purpose in one’s life. To express the story of individuals that went through the foster care system and inspire others to keep pushing. Each employee has the chance to write their story that then is expressed to the world. Each necklace they make they put their name on it remind people around the world about their story. Save A Penny is a job focused on the individual, not the individual focused on the job.
